Ulysse Nardin Caprice
 
One of my favourite watches in my collections, and to be honest, as I am writing this I am wearing this watch.
 
I am just about to head down to my local Rolex dealer and I love to wear it in a Rolex showroom, mainly because it is not a Rolex. It is a conceit I know, but I used to drive my Lotus down to pick up parts for my Ferrari just because I knew it annoyed them just a bit.
 
As much as I like Rolex, I love Ulysee Nardin. I really appreciate and admire some of their more outrageous designs like the Freak and other extravagant watches, but let"s face it, not many of us can, or indeed even want, to wear a 100,000-dollar plus watch.
 
This is the Caprice, a simple, elegant and rather timeless square-faced watch. My favourite little flourish is the row of tiny white embellishments on the bezel. That speaks of a high level of attention to detail that I find comforting. Of course, this is exemplified by its display back. I really enjoy watchmakers that are confident enough to present their movements to the whole world through a sapphire crystal. I wish Rolex would jump on this as their movements are similarly exquisite, but often the only one who gets to enjoy that is the service rep.
 
I find it very comfortable to wear, and it is a wonderful exhibition of thoughtful design that makes you smile a bit every time your shirt cuff slides back to reveal it.
 
I will miss it to be sure, but onwards and upwards and to be sensible I have far too many watches, so my loss is absolutely your gain.
