Hublot MDM Super B Chronograph 18k Gold and Stainless

I was showing a car at the Concours d’Elegance on Rodeo Drive last year and was staying in the Lux hotel right on Rodeo. I had arrived early and had a full day to wander around L.A. but instead decided to walk around the Rodeo area for the day.

I could not have imagined how much fun it was. Fencing with snotty fashion boutique employees was a mainstay but I was well equipped in designer shirt and shoes and expensive jeans. That meant they would at least speak to me.

I once had a friend who spent 15 thousand on Rodeo just buying a white button down shirt and a light windbreaker. Neither of them was his style, not by a long shot. When I asked what he was thinking he had to fess up, because his wife was sitting and gently smiling with that smile that means I would like to kill you.

It seems that the shop girl was so dismissive that Nick just grabbed the shirt and jacket and threw them on the counter along with his American Express card. He did not check the price until it rang through and he had to sign. Not wanting to affirm the shop girl’s belief that he was amongst the great unwashed, he picked up his little white shopping bag and headed to lunch with us.

Nick was very well-to-do; he just did not dress that way. Still he had a burning need to show the shop girl that he was indeed worthy of her time. It was highly amusing and I bet he has never worn either the shirt or the jacket to this day.

While I did run into this attitude in some fashion boutiques on Rodeo I have to say that none of the watch manufacturer's shops on Rodeo treated me this way. Their warm welcomes and wonderful and illuminating explanations of their products was superb.

The Hublot store personnel were certainly among the most welcoming, and honestly how I did not walk out of there with ten watches I do not know. Well, I do. I would have been killed.

That visit instilled in me an appreciation for Hublot that I still have to this day. They are wonderful watches and this Hublot MDM is a shining example of their craft.
