Rolex Daytona 6241, the Paul Newman.

Well, here is the Holy Grail of watch collecting.

Paul Newman’s original sold for the obscene price of 17 million plus a couple of years ago.

It was also pretty beaten up and in an interview I saw of a principal at the auction house that sold it the manager stated that it was quite beaten up. In fact he continued they would not have considered offering it if it had not had the provenance of Paul Newman’s ownership.

I came across this Daytona Cosmograph 6241 very recently and took the opportunity to acquire it.

It was not with the intention of wearing it because, to be honest, wearing something this valuable would scare the living beejesuz out of me.

Just having something so rare and desirable in one’s stewardship, no matter for how long is in itself a very satisfying accomplishment. In the past I have had the great fortune to possess for a time many very rare and desirable artifacts and remember every one fondly. This is one of those acquisitions. It is stopping in for a visit and then onwards to a new steward.

This Rolex harkens from 1968 and the 6241 is one of the rarest of all Daytonas of the period. In fact it is much rarer than the 6239 which was its precursor.

There are reams of material written about these watches so I won’t bore you with a tome but I will state again that if you are a collector of rare Rolex, then this is the Holy Grail.

We can have it serviced for you however, at this time it does not require any attention.

That said, I asked Rolex if I could get it serviced with them. The answer was an unequivocal yes. The catch is, they want to send it to Geneva to service and restore it. I really don’t want to do that but if a purchaser should want to take them up on it, I can facilitate it for them.
